We’ve all been there: trapped in a "sit-and-get" professional development session, watching the clock and fighting the urge to check our phones. It is the ultimate irony of our profession. We have mountains of neuroscience proving that passive consumption doesn't work, yet we instinctively teach exactly how we were taught.

Let’s be clear: the era of passive professional development is over. The bridge between ineffective traditional models and high-impact engagement is built on two pillars: Artificial Intelligence and Learner Choice. AI is no longer just a productivity hack; it is the enabler that finally makes personalized choice scalable and realistic for every learner.

Takeaway 1: AI as the Ultimate Accessibility Engine

In the past, providing multiple ways to learn a single concept was a Herculean task. An instructional designer would spend dozens of hours manually creating videos, podcasts, and text guides. Today, AI has shifted the focus from manual labor to immediate agency.

Using tools like NotebookLM, I recently uploaded a single presentation and its accompanying notes to generate a comprehensive "session roadmap." Within minutes, the AI transformed that primary resource into a video summary, a podcast-style audio file, and a curated research list.

By packaging these diverse learning pathways into a platform like Nearpod, we can give learners the power to choose their own entry point. What used to be a grueling design process is now an effortless act of curation.

 

Years ago, spending hours creating these varied resources from scratch was the norm. Now, we can easily package diverse learning pathways into a single platform... giving learners immediate agency over their learning experience.



Takeaway 2: The "Input" Gap — Why Choice Must Start Earlier

As educators and trainers, we have become relatively good at offering "choice and voice" in how learners show what they know (output). We let them choose between writing an essay or filming a video. However, we are still failing at providing choice in how they acquire that knowledge (input).

The "heavy lifting" of instructional design isn't just about the work; it’s about the cognitive load of breaking our own habits. It is hard to stop lecturing because lecturing is the default setting our brains inherited from our own teachers. To break this cycle, we must offer structured choice at the beginning of the learning process using:

  • Menu templates
  • Tic-tac-toe choice boards
  • Passion projects

When we provide these options for content delivery, we provide the brain with the intrinsic motivation it needs to begin the hard work of learning.

Takeaway 3: The "Stickiness" Formula for Choice Boards

Choice alone is a novelty, not a strategy. For a choice board to actually move information from short-term to long-term memory, every option must be grounded in the "stickiness" formula. This requires two specific cognitive practices:

  1. Retrieval Practice: Every choice must force the learner to actively pull facts and concepts out of their memory rather than simply re-reading them.
  2. Elaboration: Learners must explain concepts in their own words or apply them to entirely new, novel situations.

These practices are what allow the brain to perform the heavy lifting of long-term memory storage. Without them, choice is just "busy work" with a menu.

Here is the reality: agency isn't just a buzzword; it’s a biological requirement. The effectiveness of learner choice is validated by three major frameworks:

Self-Determination Theory (SDT): Autonomy is a fundamental human psychological need. When you offer a choice menu, you satisfy that need, which spikes intrinsic motivation and drives deeper engagement.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Grounded in the work of CAST, UDL recognizes that every brain processes information differently. Providing multiple means of engagement makes content personally relevant.

Constructivism: Learning is an active construction process. When learners build models or record podcasts, they are doing the work. A landmark 2014 meta-analysis by Scott Freeman (PNAS) proved that this kind of active learning drastically increases retention and performance compared to passive consumption.

As we look toward 2026, the demographics of our workforce are shifting. Millennials and Gen Z are no

For these learners, text-heavy presentations and unrelated graphics aren't just boring; they are cognitively overwhelming and easy to ignore. Even for those of us who still love a physical book with sticky notes, the "sit-and-get" model is becoming intolerable.

Whether you are a K-12 educator, a corporate trainer, or an onboarding specialist, adopting UDL and choice-based design is a sign of respect. It acknowledges the expertise of adult learners and models the modern instructional environment we need to see in every classroom and boardroom.

The tools to transform learning are already in our hands. AI has removed the "time" excuse, allowing us to focus on the pedagogy of choice. Our task now is to move from being "deliverers of content" to "architects of experience."
